The Marigold Foundation
We ease the financial burden of infant loss and stillbirth.
We ease the financial burden of bereaved parents and of parents who are seeking treatment for their child’s medical condition in Southwestern Wisconsin. We help cover the cost of delivery for parents who have lost a pregnancy or who’s infant passed away shortly after birth. We also help cover expenses related to treatment for a neonate or infant’s complex medical needs including travel expenses and hospital bills.
We lead the way in providing financial aid to families that are facing a complex medical diagnosis or the loss of an infant or neonate. No family should not be able to seek medical help because of finances, and no family should come home with empty arms to a pile of medical bills.
WHY MARIGOLDS?
The marigold is the birth flower of October. On October 6th, 2016, at 8:48am Theodore Nicholas Werner was born and lived for a short 30 minutes. His identical twin brother, Holden Benjamin, was stillborn at 9:17am. October is also Infant Loss Awareness month, and is also the month that one year later, the Werner’s rainbow baby, Hugo was born.
Marigolds have also been used for ages as a soothing and healing agent. While the Werner family can’t provide healing, they try to soothe a devastating journey and provide comfort through an extremely difficult time via The Marigold Foundation.
WORT.FM
WORT is a non-commercial, listener-sponsored, member-controlled community radio station broadcasting to South-Central Wisconsin and maintaining an active Internet presence. WORT programming shall respect all peoples and their environments, and shall serve a broad spectrum of the community by:
(i) Providing a forum for both the discussion of public issues, and the expansion of musical and cultural experience, in order to promote greater communication, education, entertainment, and understanding.
(ii) Facilitating community expression and providing community access to share music, culture, news, and information.
(iii) Challenging the cultural and intellectual assumptions of our listeners through unique and diverse programming.
(iv) Including audiences and programmers under-represented by other media.
The Hybrid DFY Service & The Guaranteed Funnel Service
The organizational structure of WORT reflects the station’s principles of democratic decision making; the paid and unpaid workers (the volunteers) at the station elect the Board of Directors; the Board sets policy and hires full-time and part-time paid staff. The full-time staff is organized as a collective that operates within sound management practices and written policies established by the Board. The staff collective oversees the day-to-day operations of the station.
WORT is nothing without the more than 300 volunteers who walk through the doors each week. Volunteers provide most of the on-air programming. WORT‘s distinct programming is the product of the knowledge, hard work, and creativity of the on-air volunteers. In addition, many volunteers contribute to a myriad of off-air operations.
Friends of Starkweather Creek
Friends of Starkweather Creek is a volunteer organization of citizen stewards, advocates, explorers and educators dedicated to the enhancement of the watershed’s environmental quality. We hold monthly board meetings and outings along the creek on the 3rd Saturday of each month. We also host restoration events at key locations around the creek. All are welcome to join us.
The 24 square mile Starkweather watershed covers half the east side of Madison (watershed map). Its many wetlands, springs, meandering streams and teeming wildlife were critical components to cleanse and balance the eco-system. Urbanization and low awareness filled and drained the wetlands, straightened and polluted the channels and replaced native species of plants and wildlife with aggressive and unbalanced invasives, especially humans.
In 2003, a passionate group of citizens formed friends of Starkweather Creek (bylaws) to revitalize the watershed. In 2006, the UW Nelson Institute published this extensive study of the watershed. By 2019, the watershed and stakeholder synergy reached truly inspiring levels in this annual meeting presentation.
The Friends now explore win-win ways to transform people and place.
Thanksgiving Meal Baskets/The Goodman Center
Who We Are
For the last 35 years, the Goodman Community Center has provided Dane County families with everything they need to make a traditional Thanksgiving meal at home. Thanksgiving is a time when people come together, and the Thanksgiving Basket Drive at the Goodman Center brings together the community to help everyone have a tasty Thanksgiving.
What We Do
Thanksgiving Basket Drive is possible each year with the help of hundreds of volunteers and many community partners, businesses, and organizations that host events to support our program. Goodman
collects donations from food drives, community members, businesses, and more during a donation period and then sorts and packs the baskets with the help of volunteers. Families pick up their baskets directly from Goodman in the days before Thanksgiving. Anyone in Dane County is eligible for a basket.
The drive has several components and ways to contribute:
